▷ external▶ SIGHT: Demelza is 5'7" and quite thin, especially after having lost weight during her illness. She has pale, lightly freckled skin, long, curly red hair and green eyes. Particularly expressive, unless she's been specifically instructed not to be, she's very easy to smile, but just as prone to rolling her eyes or sneering at people when they irritate her. She's generally confident and comfortable with herself, cheerful and easy to smile and laugh. For the most part, even despite her awful upbringing, she's warm and open to nearly everyone she meets. In situations where she thinks she's going to be exposed as being lower class, she can become shy and restrained, trying to make herself appear physically smaller.

» DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: There are two scars on her back from where her father beat her with his belt, one on her left shoulder blade and one just below.
» STYLE: Demelza's style will remain as close to the clothing she wore in the 18th century as possible. She'll prefer shifts, petticoats and corsets to modern undergarments, will continue to wear long skirts, but as time goes on, she'll adapt to current styles. She's never going to be seen showing off a lot of her legs, but her sleeves will get progressively shorter as she realizes it's acceptable to dress however she likes. For the most part, she dresses for comfort, as someone who does physical labour.
▶ SOUND: Demelza speaks with a Cornish accent and hovers somewhere between upper and lower class dialects. She was brought up in poverty and didn't learn to read or write until her late teens and still tends to use the lower class slang she grew up with. Because she loves to learn and is adaptable, and because she married into an upper class family, she's also very conscious of the way she speaks. When speaking with someone she thinks of as being above her, she'll often correct her use of slang and try to speak more formally. This is a perfect example of the way she shifts between trying to speak higher and slipping into slang.
▶ SMELL: Once she discovers body wash, all bets are off. She'll smell like her daughter often enough, but she'll absolutely love the variety of things she can smell like now without having to douse herself in perfume to cover the smell of her sweat. Once she's made the rounds through every possible option, she'll likely settle on citrus scents, things that are light and playful. Beyond that, she'll likely end up doing physical work and will smell of the outdoors, sweat and a little bit like a garden.
▶ TOUCH: Although she comes from a time when touch between men and women was generally limited, she's also come into the rules of such later in life. She's cautious about who she's seen touching, but she also sometimes forgets herself and will reach for arms and hands of people she doesn't know particularly well. With friends and family she's exceptionally affectionate, kissing and hugging them in greeting and when she says goodbye. She's also not adverse to physical violence and has been known to hit people when she thinks they deserve it. Ross has tried to convince her to stop this, but as far as Demelza is concerned, sometimes people just deserve to be smacked.

▶ PHYSICAL HEALTH: Though thin and not as healthy as she used to be given her recent illness, Demelza is actually in relatively good physical health. She's strong, used to physical labour, and has no chronic illnesses or injuries.
▶ INFORMATION FOR PSYCHICS AND OTHER MAGIC USERS: Demelza has no defenses against magic and how she might react would depend on a lot of external influences. How well she knows a person will count for a lot, but she'll react with anything from fear to fascination.

▶ PARENTS: Her mother, Demelza Lyon died while giving birth to Demelza's youngest brother when she was eight. Her father, Tom Carne, took to drinking and beating her senseless, so she ran away at sixteen and has seen little of him since. He's remarried, claimed to have found God, but Demelza still won't see him.
▶ SIBLINGS: Six brothers and one half-sister. Her brothers, from oldest to youngest are Luke, Samuel, William, John, Robert and Drake. She doesn't know her half-sister's name, as she was born when Demelza was 18 and long since gone from home.
▶ SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Ross Poldark. Love of her life.
▶ CHILDREN: Julia Grace Poldark and Jeremy Dwight Poldark.
▶ CLOSE FRIENDS: Dwight Enys, the local surgeon, becomes one of Demelza's closest friends. Verity Blamey, Ross' cousin, is not only family, but Demelza's only confidante and her favourite person besides her husband. Jud and Prudie Paynter were once Ross' servants, but have since been dismissed for spreading lies about Ross' faithfulness to his wife. Demelza still loves them.
▶ NOTABLE PAST RELATIONSHIPS: None. She's been in love with Ross since she was sixteen years old, though she does sometimes think of what it'd be like to kiss Captain McNeil. (He has a moustache, you see.)
▶ GOD-MODDING: If needed, it's feasible Demelza would be just about everywhere, but in particular it's fair to say your characters have seen her in Petros Park, on the beach, in any number of grocery or clothing stores, the library or any book or music store.
